Life Skills

What is Education ? With the current education system, it is nothing but the grade system. We have seen people with full of grades but don't know how to behave with the people especially elders. Lots of students go through depression and commit mistakes. People find it difficult to make decision most of the time. People blindly follow something without questioning.

So what is education ? For us education is a guide to lead a life. It has to help us in knowing us better. It has to help us in gaining knowledge which in turn can help us in improving our life better. It is one which has to help us in facing the stressful life. It is the one which can help us in finding out the solution by asking various question. It is the one which has to help us in making decisions. It is the one which can create a responsible citizen and a human being. It is the one which has to make us understand life.

So life skills are most important part of education. But how many schools impart life education ? It has been fading very slowly. That is the matter of concern.

Pupil Teacher ratio

Ideal pupil to teacher ratio is 1 : 10. But it is not uniform across the country. According to
The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009,  Pupil teacher ratio should be 30 and 35 for primary and upper primary respectively. This itself is a very big concern.
Karnataka itself has 1:50 for high schools. With this ratio we can not expect the students to get the necessary skills and knowledge.

Knowledge based education and soft skill

Many of us were volunteering for one of the school. We were shocked to see the high school students can't solve a equation which is part of lower primary syllabus. When we started doing research on this, we found out that it is a very common scenario in the schools in Karnataka. Lack of encouragement,  poor teaching methodologies, and a system to push the students to higher level without proper evaluation has created this lack of knowledge based education. It is also concern that students are finding out difficult to communicate in languages also. So there is a need for knowledge based education along with importance to soft skills.

Teaching methodologies

I have seen

Encouragement

Proper evaluation system

Art of questioning
Lack of Leaders and proper mentoring program

Lack of Infrastructure
