My top 5 - Kannada movies - 2013 -15
Last 2 years you have seen lot of developments in Kannada film industry. These changes are clearly making waves in spite of popular Star’s blind love for the remake movies. It all started with Charminar and Myna, but with Lucia it reached another level. With UK, Mythri and Rangitaranga it attracted those audience who had turned their back to Kannada movies. Here I have listed my unbiased top 5, the reason behind the changes.
Actors top 5
1. Kishore
Undoubtedly the best actor of current generation. Not even once he gave an impression that he is acting in Jatta, instead he was in character. Already known for good performance in Telagu and Tamil, he gave his best here. His success continued with Ulidavru Kandante. His acting was one of the highlight of the movie which became most versatile movie of 2015.
2. Sri Murali
His performance in Ugram won him lot of accolades. It became a turning point in his career. Though his next movie didn’t run well, but for his performance in Ugram alone he is my top 2.
3. Rakshit Shetty
His acting in UK as a lead role was awesome. People liked him more for his direction but his acting was equally impressive. After Simple agi ondu love story, the expectations were high and he proved it with an all-round performance. The tiger dance of UK is my favourite scene.
4. Achyut Rao
What to say about this actor? Even with a supporting role, he changes the fortune of a movie. Imagine UK, Oggarane and Lucia without him. You will understand how much value he gives to the final touch of the movie.
5. Prakash Rai and Sai Kumar
Though Oggarane was a remake but I would like to watch these kind of remakes instead of some stupid action movies. Prakash Rai has become success formula for south movies. His acting in Oggarane will remain as his best in Kannada. Though it didn’t run well in Telagu and Tamil, but it was taken by Kannada audience very well.
Now imagine Rangi Taranga without Sai Kumar. His acting in climax scene is the success factor along with story and direction.
Actress top 5
1. Tara
Tara stole the show for Ulidavru Kandante. It reminded me all those memories of childhood and my grandmother. Only difference was Bangade fish was for my brother and for me mango. Coming back to her acting she did with such a perfection, even sentimental scene overshadowed other performances. And as I know she has done all kinds of roles. So she is my top 1.
2. Hari Priya
What a comeback? After making mark in Tamil and Telagu she came back to give her best in Kannada. Her role as silent girl in Ugram gave full support to angry young man Murali’s rigid character.
3. Sukruta Wagle
May be the find of 2013. Took away lot of awards for her performance in Jatta. Her role gave the much needed touch to the subject of the movie.
4. Nithya Menen
Bold and beautiful Nithya Menon’s performance in Myna as differently abled girl was heart touching. Multi-talented Nithya is already well known name in south films.
5. Radhika Pandit
Popular actress of Kannada right now. Recipient of 3 south filmfare award has been getting lot of good reviews from critics. But she is my top 5 for her role in Kaddi pudi.
Movies top 5
1. Jatta
I am not biased here to name Jatta as my top 1. Jatta is directed by my cousin B.M. Giriraj. It is a complete package. Direction, message, acting by all cast, cinematography, location, lyrics and music. Full marks to the team except some technical glitches. Publicity was not good and that is the reason didn’t do well in box office. A perfect cinema which talks about Women empowerment , deforestation and many social issues. Got the second best film award in Karnataka state award.
2. Ulidavaru kandante
What a movie!!! I have not seen this kind of movie and direction in last few years in Indian cinema. Tara, Rakshit and Achyut every one did well and the hero of this movie is the director. Rakshit bagged the best director for this movie. Even Ajaneesh lokhnath and Vijay Prakash got the award for music and playback respectively.
3. Lucia
The psychological thriller which changed the direction of Kannada film industry. First public funded movie and the concept was well appreciated. Coming back to movie, the hero is director here. The way he has made this concept work is appreciable. Got best film of the year 2013 in Karnataka state award. Achyut Rao got best supporting actor award. This movie made others to think about the importance of publicity through social media. A good movie is one which makes audience think in the end.
4. Rangi Taranga
Thriller which might thrill you more than expectation. Watch out for Sai Kumar’s performance in the end. Here also the director Anup Bhandari is hero. The twists in the story is well scripted and evenly supported by background music. Though it has not shown South Canara culture clearly as shown in UK, but for the story and script this movie shines. This is another movie after Lucia and UK which used social media effectively.
5. Mythri
Again Giri’s Mythri is must watch movie. Don’t look for Power star Puneeth here. Here story is power star. Please don’t compare it with slum dog millionaire. It is a different movie and child artists have done commendable job. Puneeth has added star value otherwise such a good movie was also shown the door by audiences. If you don’t like message oriented movies, it is not your cup of tea.
Note : I wrote this before watching Uppi 2.
